Participants are assured of an undistracted learning experience as they are assigned their respective bays where they can perform hands-on activities without any distractions and based on their individual pace under the close supervision and guidance of a qualified training facilitator.
The training program begins with a discussion of the various types of plaster materials. The instructor shall focus the discussion on the appropriate surfaces for each of the types of plaster materials. After the discussion, a demonstration on the proper manner by which the surface of a ceiling or wall is prepared for plastering is conducted. Participants will also be shown how to use and effectively control plaster tools, hawks and trowels. After, the demonstration, participants will perform the task in their respective working bays.
After the hands-on activity on surface preparation, the training instructor shall conduct a demonstration of the various patching methods. After the discussion and demonstration, the participants shall again be given the opportunity to practice the patching techniques in their respective bays. Specifically, the participants will have the chance to perform plaster skimming on a block of plasterboard in their working bays. This is one of the most critical phases of the plastering course as it also highlights the importance of “breaking in” of the trowel used for skimming.
As soon as this activity is completed, participants will move on and try the same hands-on activities on an actual wall and ceiling in their respective working bays. Participants will have the opportunity to apply the appropriate methods of surface preparation and skimming techniques with the use of PVA under a simulated work situation in their bays. After the plasterboard is prepared, the participants shall apply 2 coats of skim plaster on both sections of the wall and ceiling in their respective working bays.
Another aspect of the plastering task that will also be covered during the training program is the proper technique in handling plasterboards. Participants shall be taught of the right way of cutting the plasterboards and fixing the same on the wall in the respective working bays. This program component will also show how the joints are prepared before the plaster is applied.
